Never too poor to be a donor

Wang Qing, a resident of Chongqing municipality, has donated money more than 60 times in the past four years.

Wang, 44, who is partially deaf due to an illness when he was four years old, set up an office in 2004 to mediate disputes among the disabled. He was formerly a cinema usher.

He has never married and spends most of his spare time helping the less fortunate. Wang receives a monthly pension 800 yuan ($112) but donates most of it to poor college students and others.

"Although I am poor, I feel happy when I can help others," Wang said.

Son's plea: Find my mother

Song Yongjie, 25, a resident of Shandong province, wants to find his mother before his wedding.

"My girlfriend and I plan to get married on March 1 and the only thing I want to do is to find my mother to receive her blessings. Please help me find her," Song told a local newspaper in Chongqing municipality.

Song's mother was sold by criminals to a Shandong farmer. One year after giving birth to Song, the woman was rescued and sent back to her hometown by police, and she never saw her son again.

Duck story checks out


Wen, a resident of Lanzhou, Gansu province, has a green-head mallard which is attracting a lot of attention.

Last Wednesday when Wen took the duck for a walk along the banks of the Yellow River, a passer-by called the police to inform them Wen was in possession of a protected species.

"It is my pet and I have been keeping it for years," Wen told the police. A neighbor confirmed Wen's story and he has been allowed to keep the duck.

Projects to protect mother nature

Yunnan province plans to invest 7 billion yuan ($980 million) to boost environment protection over the next three years.

The plan includes 10 projects focusing on the protection of nature reserves, world heritage sites, and wetlands. The projects will be completed in 2010.

The northwest part of the province contains a large number of rare natural features, animals and plants.

"Well protect the area as our solemn commitment to the country and the world," Qin Guangrong, governor of the province, said.

3,956 gallstones found in patient

A resident surnamed Zhou of Dazhou, Sichuan province, has set a local medical record.

The 39-year-old man underwent an operation recently to remove gallstones - a total of 3,956.

"It was a record, I have never removed so many gallstones," a doctor said.

The doctor said the gallstones were the result of Zhou's bad eating habits.

Truly a man's best friend

Chen Modao, 65, a disabled man living in Zigong, Sichuan province, has a very good live-in partner, a dog named Fentiao, who pulls his wheelchair from place to place.

Fentiao was given to Chen by a friend in February last year. The dog understands all the commands of Chen.

Every time Chen goes out, Fentiao pulls the wheelchair, and even knows when to stop at traffic lights and at zebra crossings.

Apology over price rises

A shopkeeper of Duyun, Guizhou province, has apologized in a letter to a newspaper for raising prices during the Spring Festival.

Local commercial administrations in the city warned shopkeepers and bus operators not to increase prices during the festival, but some did.

"We have fined those that did not heed the warning, a spokesman for a commercial administration, said.
